One of the main goals of sajha.com is to help Nepalis help each other.
If someone needs help or is asking a serious question, please help sajha by replying only if you have an answer or pointers to possible help. Please feel free to start your own thread but please do not post reply if you cannot be of help.
Might as well have everyone that comes to sajha sign on the dotted line as well.
ayo Bathroom pheri.. i think that button will really help you to think before you post BS in other's thread.. Good Work San bro.. I thought i could add some points in this thread so i "Clicked" so that i can Flush some Bathroomsh*tcoffee
What the heck.. you are goign to type hundreds of letters to reply.. now what are you bitching about clicking that "I Agree" button.. Just do it man.. and get on with your replying part as well...
I agree to clecik "I Agree".. ha ha.. it doesn't bother me AT ALL.. Thanks to Sajha..
With increasing clicks on "notify admin" to point out replies that make fun of people posting queries for help or simply rude replies to people who are seeking help, I knew it was time to do something about it so that people who want to post their issues or problems did not feel apprehensive about being able to ask questions and hope to get an answer.
Obviously a lot of us are in sajha to pass time during slow times at work or just free time in general, and some of us might get off on posting smart comments on queries that seem trivial to us. I understand that and in fact am happy to see that a lot of people are making a choice to spend their valuable time in sajha. At the same time, I also realize that this kind of purportedly harmless - what is simple timepass for a handful - may serve as a deterrent to other nepalis seeking actual help in many aspects of their lives in this or some other foreign land.
In addition to being a fun timepass for everyone, we can also fit in some seriousness depending upon the question at hand. Flexibility is a very important aspect of sajha that I want to stress here. Flexibility to take a lot of matters lightly, enjoy life at every occasion one gets, and also, the same flexibility to show respect to fellow Nepalis' problems and not subject serious queries into a showcase of one person's personal sense of humor.
When you register you are asked to "Please practice civility, consideration and respect for individual ideas at all times."
Disrespecting people's queries is against sajha policy and you are requested to abide by sajha policies that you agreed to abide by when you signed up.
If you have smart comments that you absolutely have to post, well, you can start your own thread.
I hope I have made myself clear. This is not communism. You are free to build your own house (thread). You are not free to go and foul up someone else's house (thread). This is simply common etiquette that doesn't need to be explained.
I do not agree. But I can still reply. I still think flagging is the way to go if sajha is not a dictatorship as you claim. If that button is to deter people from posting irrelevant stuff, who is to say, it might not deter a user from actually making a relevant comment. I think this is retarded.
If you check the "Most Rated" tab on homepage, you see that the most rated is 10 for one thread. Basically, from my experience with the rating/flagging system in sajha is that people just do not get into it. It is just not used enough for us to be able to depend on it. (It would be ideal if the flagging/rating system was utilized as it's supposed to be but as we can see here people just don't like to make that extra click )
And as far as dictatorship goes, since when did having common sense rules on etiquette become dictatorship? If anyone is allowed to say anything to anyone - even people asking for help, I'm afraid that is ANARCHY and that's not something we want to encourage here.
The user obviously had seen activity of 'haters' so he had to actually put a disclaimer in his thread - which went unheeded as we can see in the thread. That is not the type of virtual community that we want to create...
Like I said in my earlier post, you have to educate people about flagging. What are you going to do when people start clicking I agree and posting useless comments? Put another button that says "I really agree"? or ban the user? Which brings me back to the dictatorship and democracy. Dictatorship: you make your judgment and block the user. Democracy: enough people flag a users post and they get blocked. If a process such as flagging cannot work, what makes you think a mere button will? Honestly I think the reason the flagging does not work is because the threshold for being deleted is too high. What if, if a thread has been viewed 100 times, 5 flags deletes a comment, if 200 views than 10 flags and so on. There are a lot of smart users here in sajha. If you create a focus group or ask people for some input, I am sure we can come up with a solution that is not dictatorial and anarchist.
It would be ideal to have a self sustaining democratic virtual community but there are many variables that do not make it possible.
For example, one user can register multiple usernames and flag off anyone he/she doesn't like. There is no way you want to be monitoring who is who. Who knows if there are 20 users from same college showing same IP address? It would be ideal but it's not feasible. So in the end, the admin has to make a decision that is the best for the site's goal. If a users shows continuous disregard for the policies and common sense rules on etiquette, then a ban has to be placed on the username, and if escalated then to an IP ban, and even other more detailed ban structures if the user is more resourceful and determined.
what if you ban someone and that person registers a new screen name and posts again?...there are lot of what if scenarios we can come up with and personally i don't think any censorship or modship is going to change the way. trust me it's upto the people who need to act smarter and ignore any idiotic comment.
Cyberlegend, in previous reply I have mentioned IP ban and other more detailed ban structures depending upon circumstance(s).
Regarding your comment "upto the people who need to act smarter and ignore any idiotic comment."
As a host, I cannot invite people to my house and expect them to ignore idiotic comments directed at them. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect until proven otherwise. On the other hand, it's common sense to follow rules of etiquette.
"Who knows if there are 20 users from same college showing same IP address?" - So how is this going to help, you will block everyone from that IP address?
That's an example of why relying on flagging for decisions like moderating/banning users does not work. I'm giving you a scenario where it's possible for multiple users to be using 1 ip address or it could be one user faking multiple users from a single IP. So we cannot really depend on a self sustaining system as you have suggested.
The people who are agreeing do not seem to understand the legal aspect of what you post. Lets suppose I agreed to something here and posted. For some reason or another that particular issue goes to court. THEN YOUR STATEMENT IS A LEGAL DOCUMENT AND YOU WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. LOOK AT ALL THE SOCIAL NETWORKS DO YU SEE ANY OF THEM ASKING YOU TO SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE OR CLICK OK TO POST A NOTE ? NO. I REST MY CASE(I am also going to try and post without agreeing to this this to see if this works)
Bathroomcoffee It is nothing more than a common sense check/reminder before posting. You don't have to agree to it - not that agreeing to it can have any legal ramifications like you have mentioned. Perhaps for the discerning users I can change it from I agree to 'I have read it. Let me continue.'
Also as you may have noticed you no longer have to click it, just put the mouse over it and it's gone.
I have seen some of the websites (usually to watch movies) make you click on "I am human, Let me continue"....
I would like something similar. It bothers when you really need help/suggestion, you post a thread.. and one stupid comes in and writes: "you m*r*n, go f**k yourself"... for no reason.
If you are really here to reply on someone's thread.. that 'click' shouldn't bother you. It's not for you.
I agree. Be human. Be civilized. If everybody begins to behave 'nicely'...there will be no need of such reminder.
I am wondering why so many sajhaites are upset about it? It's just a reminder.. with a hope.
No hard feelings. I don't want to read BS in reply. ( I know somebody's going to write BS)
and it begins - on Day 1 Trump will begin operations to deport millions of undocumented immigrants
I hope all the fake Nepali refugee get deported
