What do you guys think ? I have been as a PR for 7 years. Do you guys think it's good to take citizenship ? What are the benefits ? Have you applied for citizenship or have been staying as PR ?

Go for the citizenship mate...It would save you a lot of hassle (especially for GC holders who have to make it back to the US once a year in order to avoid losing it...In some cases I know peeps who've lost it even though they returned once a year and are still appealing their case for the GC to be reinstated).  Also, with dual citizenships given by the Nepali govt these days, it really is a good choice in applying for the citizenship.  These are my thoughts...yours could be different.  Go with what you think applies to your case.

I agree with your vibe here. You should have done the otherwise to get more hits and that would give your response such as, "oie ta pagal bhaies" or "jhukyauchas gadha" etc etc.... courtesy of our very profound educated respected Sajha community.

Coming back to your original question. There are numerous benefits if you apply for your citizenship. You could claim social security, Medicare and unemployment too. You wouldn't have to inform USCIS if you move with in 10 days filling the AR11 form. Your visa process would be much more smoother with US passport (if you wish to go to any other country traveling). Easier for you go through TSA despite that fact your are brown. You could even sponsor your family members who want to come to the USA (would take years and years but just for the heck of it). You would have the rights to vote in any election held in your state, district and presidency. Lets say you plan to go back home after all these years and you also decided to retire. Go to US embassy and reap the benefits of the taxes that you paid here. I've seen that been done. And apart from everything else, when you travel back to USA, in the port of entry the officer would smile and you and say, "Welcome back home sir." instead of glaring and you and suspecting you as a something else.

Good luck,
YekloYatri

Dual citizenship?? Samsara are you sure Nepal has started dual citizenship? I thought the proposal is put somewhere on the shelf by some mantris at Singha Durbar.

Here's the thing, if you stay in the US as PR, the ordinary citizens will only view you as someone who has a Green light ( GC ) to stay in the US as long as you desire. If you're a citizen, you become one of them and most importantly, you get to elect the president i.e. vote. Even the Puerto Ricans can't vote. I still remember the Korean fellow ( Vtech shooter ) who got blasted for being able to buy a gun by none other than Glenn Beck who questioned the authority of that guy to buy the guns. I'm not saying that you should get the citizenship so that you could use it to unconditionally bag the rights of buying arms and do anything as such but provided that you're a genuine Nepali fellow who's here in the US to make a fortune, I'd suggest that you took the oath and became a US citizen! You've already stayed here long enough to prove that you want to live here all your life so why still choose to stay here as a guest instead a becoming an American?!

Daz, you're right...Dual citizenship was just a talk that was going on but thanks to Upendra Mahato and his likes as they have now been able to put their bribed representatives into the cabinet.  I think with all the pressure put forth by many NRNs who see a financial oppoortunity in Nepal and have found a way to satisfy the crooked netas in their payroll, the constitution may be charging full-steam towards an amendment soon.

GREEN LIGHTS FROM ME BRO... MY DAD'S ALSO ABOUT TO APPLY FOR IT... AND SOME THE BENEFITS HAVE ALREADY BEEN LISTED BY YEKLOYATRI... AND BTW I THINK NEPAL DOESN'T GIVE DUAL CITIZENSHIP BUT U CAN GO BACK TO NEPAL WHENEVA U WANT CAS I FOUND SOMETHING THAT SAYS A FORMER NEPALI CITIZEN CAN GO BACK TO NEPAL WID A RESIDENTIAL VISA... SIMILAR TO GREEN CARD GIVEN BY U.S. OR SETTLEMENT VISA GIVEN BY U.K. TO GURKHAS....
HERE IS THE LINK TO LEARN MORE ABOUT IT...

I don't think 'dual citizenship' in Nepal has taken effect yet.  I guess it will take a few more years.  Like Samasara ji and Yekloyatri ji mentioned above, having a US citizenship has more benefits/priviledges than having PR. Since dual citizenship has not taken effect yet now;  if you go for the US citizenship, you may face some legal complication(s) on your property in Nepal, if you still own one. It is just a thought.

I dont know why we really need to have dual citizenship!

Yatauti, and few above me, if you have a citizenship (nagarikta patra, id card) of nepal, then simply apply for citizenship here. You will get an American passport, which you can use to travel to world's any destination, mostly Nepal for me.

And, fortunately if u have any property (ghar, khet, gajja, jamin) in nepal, then just use your citizenship (nagarikta patra, id card) of Nepal in order to transfer to someone else's name, sell, or buy properties. I know, i know for sure that when you have to do official paper work "laal-purja", clerks will only ask for your citizenship (nagarikta patra, id card), they won't ask for a passport.

About benefits, yekloyatri has the bulls eye. Read his comment.

Not true that if you commit crime you will not be deported with citizenship. It depends on the level of crime . if they really  want to deport you , they will find something minute in the trailing past that will make you deportable. Consider yourself 2nd class citizen in this matter if not born here.
