There are approximately 85000 NGOs and 270 INGOs in Nepal. If you compute that figure, its one NGO/INGO for every 350 people.
http://myrepublica.com/portal/index.php?action=news_details&news_id=49442

And there is one doctor for every 5,000 people. http://myrepublica.com/portal/index.php?action=news_details&news_id=49442

Only in Amazing Nepal! Perhaps if the so-called NGOs focused on only those 350 people, we'd reach somewhere?

I know, and agree with, the point you are making. We have too many NGOs and not much being done. I agree. But, I hope you understand why one cannot take your stats literally.

Sure there are 85k NGOs, but each one has different reason/purpose. If each one were to raise the living standard of Nepali then you can make that case. Some are strictly there for environmental reasons, some for health and others for various other reasons.

One can even argue that INGOs aren't acting in interest of Nepal. Some will claim them to be international propaganda/spy campaigns. Whatever the truth is, they are there and we need a sound government policy to regulate them and get an efficient outcome from them. I know many of them are doing a good job, others could follow suit, rather than just providing a good car and high income for the employees.

----

I think you forgot to put point number  (c)

But not all NGO's are there for the reasons you outlined.

NGO stole point number (c).

Agree with rethink. There have been some really good work done that not many pay attention to. Child literacy, infant mortality rate, adult health and immunication etc have shown significant improvement because of good works by some INGO/NGOs.

Kiddo, I think I failed to explain myself.

I am not belittling all the good work done by NGOs and INGOs.

I was just amazed as the sheer number of NGOs. They keep mushrooming, and I wonder for what purpose (other than ulteriorly making money), since we like to condemn the Government organization for everything wrong with our nation. Why aren't we holding these NGOs(the ones that don't do a thing) accountable with the same fervor?

That is the total number; I presume only a fraction of it would be actively working.

850 or 85000 lol. Could they provide the list of all those 85000? if it is 85000 then it is like every district has more than 1000 NGOs.

@dcgirl, don't be surprised with 85,000. Every tiny mahila samuha, volley ball club (who may not even meet regularly) that are registered under samaj kalyan parishad ain will be regarded as NGOs.

Folk, don't be to venomous, really! It's cheap ass way, in any society, to complain about the government or any establishments in general. May be either due to ignorance or anger.

Kiddo makes a good point about the child mortality rate etc.

@Kiddo, you gave them credit for the achievements already made. That's good. Social changes take a loooong time, not a electric switch. 850,000 NGOs  need to work day and night to make real changes.

When you see in news about a 'so n so district being declared as an open defecation free (khulla disha mukta) district', do you see decades long effort by NGOs? by a lot of them? or you think some minister had a piffany while pooping in by the  'dhaan bari' staring towards the sunny sky? What do you think?

If you talk about corruption NGOs, I wouldn't agree with you more. There are some who are in the game only for that purpose. You know why? They all come from our fairly corrupt society, so some bad apple doesn't discount the great work done by others. We just need to look hard enough.
