The Big One - the earthquake is coming, but when? - [By: Jesper Lambaek]

Source: http://www.historiefabrikken.dk/index.php/projects/235-the-big-one-jordskaelvet-kommer-men-hvornar#jesper

Jesper Lambaek is a Danish filmmaker, currently in the process of making an interactive web-documentary about earthquake in Nepal.

In his own words:

"I want to tell a story about the city and its inhabitants. I want to share my fascination and love for the place. I want to try to influence the world to understand, that we must help Kathmandu to prepare for the quake. Through education, emergency planning and earthquake prevention. My movie can push on to that process. It can support the argument for preparation."

The worst that can happen -

The worst scenario is in the night. Katmandu sleeps. The inhabitants lie in their beds, on mattresses or rush mats and sleep. They are often manny in small rooms. The powerful tremors come without warning.

So many houses in Katmandu are striking rundown. The entire townscape is characterized by a haggard, ugly facade of unfinished and destroyed houses. I am no expert, but solid, they do not look. Many will collapse at the first shake. They will collapse over the sleeping. In Haiti, some say, 250000 people died within 40 seconds. How many will die here?

The survivors will pass on the streets, out of the houses. The already incredibly primitive and improvised electricity supply system, will collapse. The roads will be full of fallen power lines and collapsed houses. Ambulances, police and fire engines will not be getting through.

The public system is already on the pumps in Nepal. There is no real preparedness for such a situation. People are left to themselves and to the mercy of the outside world.

The morning comes to Kathmandu. Everyone is in shock. You hear screams from the ruins. People try to help others out. There are aftershocks. Nothing works. Telephone communication, water supply, infrastructure, electricity. Everything is down.

The small airport in Katmandu is perhaps still useful.
How many days does it take until humanitarian aid arrives?
How will it reach?
From India and China?
The roads from there, can be blocked by landslides. The bridges collapsed.

How many will die in the ruins? How many will die due to lack of treatment?
Are some hospitals still standing? At what level do they function?

Facts-

Kathmandu is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. With an estimated population of 2-3 million across the whole Kathmandu valley. The city has a population growth of 6.5% per year.

The city is number 1 on the independent GeoHazards Internations list of earthquake-prone cities where the disaster will be the greatest. They estimate that there will be 65,000 deaths per one million inhabitants.
http://www.forbes.com/2007/12/04/earthquakes-india-japan-biz-cx_db_1203earthquakes_slide_2.html?thisspeed=20000

The earthquake is predicted to be 8.4 on the Richter. The last strong earthquake hit Kathmandu in 1934 and according to experts, there is between 50 and 100 years between each strong earthquake.

The Big One - is a term used for the large, devastating earthquake.

This is what I've been thinking lately. It would be catastrophic. I was looking on those links for possible solutions or measures to minimize the harm but found none. Then again, I thought those 'duck n don't run' tips are not gonna work out there. Just looking at those concrete jungles so densed and attached together, which look like piled-up bricks from up above there is nothing we can do much. Those buildings are no way in any standard to withstand anykind of shock. Even the mighty technology in Japan which always flaunted about their shock-proof buildings couldn't really handle major earthquakes in the past. There is no place to feel safe and nothing much we can do against mother natures wrath should it happen. But say if the same scale quakes occurs in some plain green grassland, are there gonna be any loss of life? No, not at all. So, it's the structures and buildings that's gonna take lifes, not the earthquake itself. I blame how our system doesn't moderate how building should be built. I feel sorry for them. Prayers for everyone in advance.

It is true that an earthquake is a natural disaster and we don't have any control over it.

I also agree that the earthquake doesn't kill you, it is the buildings and structures that does.

However, in my opinion, preparing now can increase your chances of survival should an earthquake strike and presume you don't get killed instantly.

Things you can do to better prepare yourself -
- Learn about what to do during and after an earthquake.
- Prepare an emegency kit to-go bag
http://www.nset.org.np/nset/php/prepare%20yourself_EEK.php
- Develop a family plan

When the earthquake strikes, people will be in panic mode and in shock. During that time, it will be very difficult to coordiante or think sensibly. Preparing beforehand will help you during the panic and shock period.

Should an earthquake strike, it will be every man for himself and every families for themselves. Don't expect the government to help you out.

There is so much information available on the internet about what you can do to prepare for an earthquake.

National Society for Earthquake Technology - Nepal (NSET) has valuable information on their website suitable for the scenario in Kathmandu.

Check it out -

Reminds me of those people who preach the end of the world. There are people who are preparing for the apocalypse.

Apocalypse is a myth.

Whereas, the possibility of an earthquake in Nepal is a fact, backed my scientific evidence.

Many people in Nepal don't realise that Nepal is among the high risk countries in terms of earthquake occurrences. You are evidently one of them.

Nepal is a seismic prone country and the risk it faces from earthquakes are very high. Past records have shown that Nepal can expect two earthquakes of magnitude 7.5-8 on the Richter scale every forty years and one earthquake of magnitude of 8+ in Richter scale every eighty years. The last great earthquake to strike Nepal was in 1934 which had a magnitude of 8.3 Richter.

thebigone I agree that it's a possibility and I hope it does not happen because the construction of houses and other structures are not very good.

Thesedays lot of people are investing their money on apartment complexes that are over 10 storey tall. These will all be worthless if such an earthquake takes place.
