Yesterday, I talked about the immaturity and total disregard of the current government (and all the ones preceding it) regarding the education system of Nepal that is in place. It turns out, it was even worse.  I would say the approach he took in proposing handing over the public education system to the private schools was probably malicious.  I have a good reason to accuse this heartless policy.

When the proposal came out during the speech and I read the news, my first thought was, “Did he even consult with the private schools about this?” When the PABSON and N-PABSON, the two organizations controlling the private schools brought out their unwillingness and refusal to agree, it became evident that the finance minister had held no consultation or had no support of the people he was handing over the system. Who would ever do such a thing? The answer is obvious. The answer is simple --Either a person who is clueless or one who couldn’t care less.

He did not care. It became even more worrisome when the education minister came out saying that he was not consulted either.  What world are we living in now in this pandemic world? Have the authorities in Nepal been affected by COVID in a different, more lethal way? Has it started infecting their brains instead of the lungs?

Any person with an iota of intelligence would know that the most important sector for the government to focus on for the nation’s benefit is education.  South Korea, Singapore, and Japan are prime examples in Asia for their quality education and high ranking in the world stage. Singapore even boasts of the highest PPP in the world, even though it is a tiny island nation. It stands with the highest IQ, ranking number one with an average IQ of 102.

For the people, there is one simple test to gauze their government.  It is by their seriousness, innovation, scientific approach, and pragmatic technical application in the education environment. Even more important than these 21st-century traits and needs are the basic character and cultural component of education. As we have seen time and again, the doctoral degree does not mean any benefit for the nation, if the said person is actually working for the foreign vested interests rather than the people’s well-being.  Former PM BR Bhattarai “Kami” is a brilliant example of this.

The basic education in the formative years should be about our culture, history, and spiritual identity that established pride in being who we are. Current education seriously lacks in instilling pride in our ancient roots and culture.  We have to know who we are and then we can interact with the world, and other people based o our own true identity.  I am reminded of a Ukrainian girl who was brought up by dogs. She did not realize she was human. She did everything dogs did, despite being human. That is why we must be proud of our Vedic roots and knowledge that is the source of all the knowledge in the world.

Once our identity is firmly emphasized through our education, then the most important thing is to make sure we place priority in building good character founded on living in truth and “dharma.” If people naturally choose to live in truth, then there would never be casteism, discrimination and social ills perpetuating to this day, and inequality still acting like a plague at every turn.

These are just basic tenets of goals of good education that enhances national morals and established a good foundation for the nation to move ahead in any direction that is needed.  Unfortunately, due to historical blunders and myopic vision of leaders of Nepal, education has focused only in exams and now some skills are being touted as essential as an integral part of education.  That is a wrong approach, and will never bear good results.

Let the education begin from the heart and then reach the mind. Above all Nepal must reside in both the heart and the mind.
