Give the Young Guns a Chance

Finally, we have an elected government in place with Balendra Shah aka Balen, sworn in as our Prime Minister along with his fellow cabinet members who will now lead our country for better or worse.

It really doesn't matter if Balen dresses up all in black and refuses to throw away his shades as long as he does the right thing. What do you mean by the right things? All we ask for is transparency, accountability and good governance.

It will not be easy for the Balen government with the current incompetent, bloated and corrupt bureaucracy in place but a slow and steady approach to minimize corruption and provide better services to the general public will help win the hearts and minds of us ordinary Nepalis.

The new government is expected to do wonders by those who voted for Balen and RSP while the old defeated political parties who no longer have their say in political appointments and loot and power sharing will play the blame game from day one.

The first decision carried out by the Balen government is to implement the recommendation of the Karki Commission report. And it's a very courageous decision and the one that they cannot back down from like the interim government did but it will also invite the old fogies fighting back using their cadres to shut down the country and carry out masal jooloos in hopes of the saving their skin.

The Congress and UML are the ones who will have to face the music and even the former IGP and many civil servants will have to be held accountable as well. Will this affect the morale of the police and the CDOs? Well, if we do not hold anyone accountable now then protesters will continue to be killed in the future instead of being dealt with restraint and non-lethal means to control any crowd.

Our system is broken but it can be fixed. Our government employees do not want to use digital means and software to be productive and efficient because it will be less difficult to hide the bribes and other illegal methods to extort from the service seekers. The whole system depends on extortion not only from the public but also from the government employees who have to bribe the senior officers for lucrative postings and promotions and in much higher positions, even politicians are involved in corruption.

Since we do not have a coalition government for now, we can be pretty sure that there won't be bhaag bandas and extreme loot from our elected officials but there will be corruption from the sarkari karmarcharis who depend on the loot to enrich themselves and provide a luxurious lifestyle for their dear ones.

The old media wallahs and even the former major political parties' wallahs are already questioning the appointment of Sudan and other young ones as ministers. What is wrong with Sudan and what was right with criminals like Lekhak or Khand or Situalua or other previous Home Ministers who have all been reported to have engaged in massive corruption?

Let us give our young bloods a chance. We are not here to evaluate them for what they will do in the next 100 days or a year. It is a five-year marathon and not a sprint. They might make some mistakes or will tried to be played by our sarkari hakims but these young ones do not have to feed their cadres and make shady byaparis happy and that means, they will not be so eager to engage in corruption and loot the treasury and extort from everyone else.

It doesn't matter if you are a RSP fan or still aligned to the old Congress UML Maoist network, give these young lads and ladies a chance. And for the first time in two decades, we see mostly young faces and not the same old three old fogies who thought they were the new Maharajas who could do no wrong while starving the public and living in a bubble where they were free to loot and make their cadres and cousins prosperous while millions had no choice but to move abroad for better educational and employment opportunities.

There will be a fight back from the 'mafia' byaparis, corrupt police officers and civil servants. The cadres of Congress and UML will take to the streets and try to disrupt our daily lives. India will be watching and so will China and the US and the EU and everyone else. Let Balen and his crew do their thing. Let us all be positive and not judge them in every decision they take and have a different set of moral standards for them while we allow the old fogies like Deuba, Prachanda and Oli to get away with the murder of innocent lives and for looting the country dry when they were in power.
