Is not this a pleasant news to know that IBM and Microsoft are going to have a software development unit in Kathmandu? But, we do not know when.

Most of the multinational hi-tech companies have their development units in China and India. Why could not Nepal share her fate? Is it because of the lack of competent man power or because of the negligence of national policy?

Everybody knows that people in planning commission are doing their great job in the INTEREST of nepali economy. If it is so, why have we not seen any effort to bring hi-tech industry in Nepal? I guess, we need some well informed, hi-tech technocrat as a national planner.

Or is it because, everyone in nepal is a politician???

What you say????

Hi San diego Nepali ;

I am not an expert but I think,it is becuase of the country's unstable politics that leads to Nepal bandh, which then leads to market closure. This contributes a great loss and multinational companies cannot survive on such environment.

Further,Nepal has a load shading problem with the electricity which isnt good for foreign companies to invest as electricity ,the very primary necessity for a firm isnt reliable.

Its not that we nepalese lag behind in IT, There are thousands of graduates who arent able to utilize their knowledge because of lack of opportunity in Nepal. As mentioned earlier, the goverment has to come up with lucrative policy to attract foreing investment and also, the country needs to maintain stable goverment that wouldnt interfere with the business in and out.

We Nepalese in the US dont wanna go back to nepal beacause of Maoist problems and no oppotunity. Chinese and Indian graduates with Masters and Phds in the US are returnig home as their country has tremendous economic boom and they dont need to go through the hurdles such as sponsorship for residency in their country. In the near future if Nepal has all the favorable ingredients for a business to prosper ,then Nepalese graduates will go back home and do like the Indians and Chinese.

Don't want to be smart aleck, but Nepal bandh has no gori becheko saino with software development. They don't have to carry software to Calcutta, put it on a port and send it to Seattle to Microsoft office. If talent is in KTM, MS can go to KTM.

KankaiRiver,
These companies do want stability, what are you talking about. You are not talking about just stability only, you are talking about infrastructure and economy... You might think you could develop a system using UPS instead of hydel, drinking coke instead of tap water and eating Big Mac FedEx'd from the US to your house, but it is not realistic(barring some few indivduals).

This is no secrete that we (Nepalis) are missing the multi-billion dollor business opportunity. The hi-tech industry needs the least infrastructure to setup. We are not devoid of talents. There are so many educational institutes opened up in the recent past. And surely, quality comes with quantity. If Indians and Chinese can tap that business, why not us?

The hi-techies in Nepal are mostly surviving by engaging themself in profession like teaching (the hi-tech). There is no end consumption of this huge mass. Recently, it was posted that some colleges are shutting down their hi-tech education. Is not this a set back in the long run?

Pheri

The Talks of Microsoft and IBM being in nepal has been there for a while, even though we have the brains and talanted people big companies will not come to nepal, coz the way it works.

First reason why they wont come is our country, as we all know our country is no a Hemi engine thats works smoothly. Our country is like an old engine which backfires a lot, with bad transmission like the political system and a very bad cooling system like the judicail system, its not possible for big companies like that to come to nepal.

There are no technology laws in back these technology based companies and even if there is, the slow judical system is really painfull.

International companies want security, and these companies have lots of technology secrets.

The other problem is work ethics, if an employee the company iseleasing secrets then there is no way to protect the company even if there is, the slow judical system will do its damage.

You have seen the recent rise in the indian economy coz of all the call center and stuff like that, let me tell you one thing, go ask any american who has talked with the customer support from dell and ask how much help he or she got, and even ask if he or she is gonna call back again. You can buy american's identity in india for very cheap.

This will be the reason for the call centers comming back to US, the call centers will not reach nepal, as we still are lacking the internet power and NTC dose not like VOIP for sure. The recent rise of companies like geek squad is due to americans dont like talking to a person who dont understand them and ask stupid question like, Is your computer plugged?

The other factor is the situation of the country almost half ruled by the rebels right now investing in nepal dose not sound a good idea at all that to a hard core communist rebels, capatalist companies like microsoft dose not like that at all.

If we could harnesh our hydro energy what place in earth will be a better place to make the next microsoft campus or IBM development center. I always have dreamt nepal to be better then swiss alps one of these days.

And for all the tech companies out there what better place will there be in the world to build their data center, we got the best cooling for their servers.
