It is NOT the King's job -- or for that matter, the job of the King-led cabinet -- to
take actions against the vrastacharis no matter how much we dislike these
vrastacharis.

I hate to say this, but I can easily imagine the likes of Ramesh Nath Pandey taking their "badala" against their enemies by calling them vrastacharis and what not at
this moment. You can't change human nature for being what it is; (and no, I am
NOT related to any vrastacharis on the list!)

As it is, what the King has done (i.e. usurp power like this) is questionable AT BEST,
to put it mildly.

On top of that, he now wants to BROADEN his mandate to get into bits of so-called
good governance too. The king is not stupid, yes; but he's not Superman either.

The point is: In times like these, you can't have too many agenda on the plate. Yes, Nepal has tons of problems, but this is NOT the time to deal with all of them. Dealing
with all of Nepal's ills at this time would just waste time, divert attention, dissipate resources and tire everyone.

Better to focus EXCLUSIVELY on the STATED GOAL of defanging the Maoists as quickly as possible (assuming that's indeed trump card) and then quickly return the country to the pre-October 4 2002 era.

OK, it might just be some wishful thinking.

But if reports of continuous and shocking human rights violations -- assuming the Pokhara Kanda is true (and it's easy to imagine more of such reports in coming days) -- by the jawaans of our armed forces keep on trickling out of Nepal, then, let's face
it, things do not bode well for the King-led cabinet.

Like the Maoists, you can't kill your own people and then claim some sort of legitimacy.
That just won't do.
At all.

Ashu,

Are you endorsing the takeover as justified assuming that the "trump card" assumption is valid? Just curious. Thanks!

Of course solving Moist mess is the MAIN Goal.

But eliminating corrupt leaders is the precursor to that Goal. Otherwise those corrupt leaders will become again nuisance to King G initiatives in solving Moaists Problem.

It's good that King G has put the throne on the table now. Either he will be successful, or he will fly to some remore luxurious island in the pacific ocean.

Ashu has termed the fight against the Maoists as Gyne' trump card. The trump card was played when Nepal dislodged the Tibetan shrines, I believe. The Maoist issue is one of the cards visible in the hand of G Shah.

That it will not cut it I agree with Ashu. Without going into all the details, the King has effectively shot at his own foot, not once but at least twice, for one thing. It is totally wrong to put so much trust in the Army when the king is fighting against his own subjects, no matter how good the relationship between Mr. Thapa and G Shah. Remember Kot Parva?

Politics 101 says for good governance you need 3 independent and separate branches of government; Executive, Legislative and Judicial. The executive branch, when acts as Judicial branch (e.g. prosecuting corrupt politician), will most likely to act in its own self interest, i.e. to increase its own power by getting rid of competition.

Are all of Nepal's army generals illegitimate lovechilds these two families? Do you know of anyone in the Royal Army who believes in democracy and has publcly stated so?

I'd heard that UML, during its reign, tried to infiltrate the Clan by promoting certain people in the Royal Army...

Echoes,

The King has a history of getting away with things he wants: from buying fancy cars in times of crises to naming Paras as the CP to appointing three PMs in two years and much, much else besides.

The Nepali civil society was and is too partisan, too impotent, too addle-minded and too divisive to do much besides filing petitions from afar and writing protest letters that go nowhere. This was the pattern before, and this is the pattern now.

And so, it really doesn't matter -- except for strategic credentialism -- whether one endorses or opposes the King's move. The move has already been made.

The point is: When you take a series of increasingly bigger gambles, like the King has done since 2001, and WIN every time (i.e. got what you wanted), then, naturally
there comes a point when you feel that you are so invincible that you can, by golly, RISK everything and still go on to win the jackpot. Your hubris takes over, you
surround yourself with "yes men" and good judgement goes out of the window.

Yes, King G was a businessman. But alas, he was NEVER a businessman in a
competitive market where he had to create new ideas, assess competitors' moves,
use intuitive game theory to take advantage of the likely outcomes of others' moves on his and vice versa, and survive in the cut-and-thrust of dynamic, if chaotic-looking, ruthless market mechanisms (which in some way mirroe democracy). He made his money in protected industries where who you know was/is more important than what you
know and what you can learn fast to adapt.

And so, as a risk-theory hobbyist, my concern is that King G has probably not
undersood that all his "achievments" so far could very well be attributed to nothing more than a series of DUMB GOOD LUCK and NOT to his taking control of and managing so
many uncertainties and unknowns along the way.

Yet he has audaciously and stunningly plunged into the biggest unknown of his life -- suspending incoveniences such as civil liberties and thereby throwing Nepal's and
many Nepalis' lives at risk too.

What if he doesn't win the jackpot?

It's comforting to believe that maybe he has some trump card against the Maoists.

But his wanting to DIFFUSE his attention to cover so much ground -- from providing
land to bonded labourers to taking actions against the corrupt (all worthy goals but totally distracting from the NUMBER ONE and the EXCLUSIVE PRIORITY of dealing with the Maoists) -- lead me to believe that maybe he doesn't have a clue as to what he wants to do next, and maybe he thinks that getting busy with all sorts of activities
is a substitute for getting results. Maybe he's just waving his hands in the air, and -- angry at our netas -- we are hoping against hope to see rabbits coming out of
the hat!

But let's NOT delude ourselves.

If the King wins (that is to say, the Maoists are gone and all that and I give this a probability of 20 per cent), then, I would expect that victory to lead him and his
people to tighten controls all the more in Nepal to suit their terms. To the victors,
after all, go the spoils.

If the King loses (and I give this a probability of 50 per cent), he could always win sympathy points by people in years from now who will say, "Well, you know, he did
risk everything." [After all, we all tend to be more willing to gamble when it comes to losses, but are risk averse when it comes to gains.]

If things continue to get muddled in Nepal for another 1 to 10 years (and I give this a probablity of 30 per cent) with various fights among the political parties, the Maoists
and the King, then, Nepal will just slowly bleed and bleed, to a weaker state -- leaving many of us as just that: exiles everywhere.

Like Yasar Arafat, the political parties in Nepal NEVER missed an opportunity to miss
an opportunity.

There were poor, defenceless, helpless, widowed in Dailekh and other places in rural Nepal who rose against the Maoists. But these women received NO support, NO solidarity and no words of comfort from the political parties who were busy with
their own shenanigans. Girija had the gall to have Govinda Raj Joshi lead one of the marches in Ratna Park.

11,000 Nepalis -- most of them poor and downtrodden; therefore not related to MOST Sajha visitors -- have died in the war against the Maoists. Yet the political parties could muster neither effective political courage nor sustained moral outrage to take the Army and the Maoists to task. They only raised ruckus for a day or two when one of their own karya-kartas was killed. Else, it was business as usual for them.

Samyukta Jana Morcha, the ideological cousins of the Maoists, woke up to the Maoist atrocities late in the game when they realized that Maoists meant business in terms of literally making others shed blood.

It's fair to say that Nepal needs political parties BUT not these netas. Let Girija and Makune and others accept blame for creating conditions for the King to make his
move and let them then RETIRE forever from politics. They are an embarrasment
to most young Nepalis under the age of 40 (who make up more than 80 per cent of the population!)

Let there be NEW and FRESH leadership in these and other political parties.

Somehow, having closely observed the sheer abuse of power by Girija and Makune and others and their then confidence that they could get away with all their excesses -- does NOT make me -- a mere citizen -- all that excited to fight for these netas who are past their "sell by" dates.

In my opion, the new Govt. came up with the vrastachari's list because they have to arrest all most all the politicians affiliate with Deuba, Girija and Makune. And the Govt. cannot arrest them without any proper agenda or proof but the easy way to locked them up is by putting their name on vrastacharis. Actually its easy to prove it. Well, as we all know, these people were nothing 15 years ago, now all of sudden they have everything from bungalow to expensive cars. Where did the money come from? Even you add all their salaries for entire period while they were at Govt. and lets say they didn't even spend the peny. Do you think they can save the money they have or built that luxurious building? And if the human right pressure from international sector to Govt. to release them, then the Govt. will be like well, we arrest these people not as political activist but for corruption.
And on top of it King Gyanendra trying to sweep out all these corrupted personal within three years and would like to bring new face in nepalese politics.
I would like to submit Ashu's name too, as he is very educated and his intension is very clear and surving his country now instead of settling in U.S. You got bright future Ashu, Good Luck and keep it up.

I don't think Mr. Dahal and Mr. Mahat are corrupt. I am not sure about others but definately they are not. I don't even think Prakash Man Singh and Mr. Nidhi have done corruption, coz I never heard anything against them. Country is going in different direction fellows. Watch out. And I think everybody appreciated Mr. Surya Upadhyay's job, what happened now, he is unqualified and King is gonna replace his post.

I will give this 70 per cent chances , on the grounds that full militirization of the whole country is virtually impossible for king gyanendra due to our dwindling economic reasons and restricted foreign military aids.

I am afraid to make such a pessimistic remark but seems like this political limbo will continue for atleast 10 year until the Death of King Gyanendra.
