I must have applied to some 300 jobs, had over 200 calls from the recruiters and the direct employers, who would turn away as soon as they hear that i would need H1B sponsorship,,A company finally agreed to call me in for on site interview for a position that they did not even have as an opening in their website. They called me based on my inquiry for any possible opening in their place and that was my first job,,kind of underpaid one when it started. But it has worked out well since then.. That was some 7 years ago..not sure how it it now..And yeah mine is engineering field too..

Wow! Looking at these replies confuses me a lot. A khaire told me the other day something like this . "jobs at S-T-E-M field are always available in the US 'coz most of the Americans don't go for these". He also told me that Civil Engineers are already shortage in the US.

I am applying thru monsters , careerbuilder and company websites but no luck so far !! May be I have applied in about 100 companies so far and my luck is 1 % that is 1 phone interview. I have no experience in engineering field is that the only reason I m not getting any calls? My Indian frens are getting tons of calls and some of them got hired too !! Is it my damn luck or is it my resume which has my school projects , research assistant , TA but any experience on my field ! What do u suggest I Shud put on my resume ? That's all I have !! My search is going no where !!

My suggestion to you is "DON'T BRING UP THE ISSUE OF H1-B SPONSORSHIP AT THE INITIAL STAGE". By bringing that issue you are scaring most of the recruiters because most of the recruiter think h1-b is a complicated legal procedure and don't want to get involved in it. Just try to get your foot inside the company at the moment. Most of the people I know (including me) got the job because we didn't mention anything about the h1-b sponsorship at the interview.
Once you get the job and are well acquainted with your manager, you can explain him/her about the H1-b procedure, cost, and other legal requirements. They cannot fire you citing you provided inadequate information during the interview. This will expose them to the racial or ethnic legal law suit. Once you are in, YOU ARE IN.
If the company is willing to sponsor, GREAT, good for you. In a worst case scenario, if the company declines to go through the sponsorship procedure, tell them you will hire your own lawyer and bear all the legal expenses, but you will require help from HR in your paperwork. If H1-b legal procedure is completely alien to the company, you would need to explain them about the procedure. Usually, the total cost for H1-b including lawyer's fee range from $4k to $7.5K. This shouldn't be a problem once you get the job.
For now, don't worry about the H1-b sponsorship, just try to secure a job first. Before you apply for any jobs, think what the recruiter is looking for in the candidate and how you can stand out from the rest of the job candidate. Considering you have had call from over 200 recruiters, I don't think you have any problem with your resume or cover letter. You just need to change your approach and be patient. This is the frustrating stage that everyone has to go through. GOOD LUCK !!! Hope this helps

Never talk abt sponsorship.........don't apply thru webpages like careerbuilder or monster.com; it's a waste of time.......at least it was for me..........look for local professional organizations or groups that has website with career opportunities if u r looking locally or in the location of your choice............go to career fairs..........mail managers or hr personally to keep up with your application.........go to the company that interests you and apply through their websites.
most of the time, it's just apply, wait and watch............the first knock u get, grab it.........don't wait for better opportunity.
