We should be proud that Nepal has such a singer as Udit Narayan. That was what I used to think at least. But reading his interview in www.expressindia.com, it makes me feel how low our dignity as a country has fallen. No, I do not blame Udit Narayan. It is his rights and enjoyment not to claim Nepal as a home. I feel great that at least he claims to have got initial training in KTM (he called the trainers "local directors"). Citizenship changes, but not your birthplace. Mithila is a city in Janakpur, I believe. Mithila was a state back then some centuries ago, but Udit Narayan was born not a century ago. It is a living loss to Nepal. Some how I can't help thinking all good people claim to be not from Nepal, but those stinking ones come back and run for municipality. Why do we stink, why does Nepal stink? This should give us all Nepal a motivation: not to force a Nepali to be a non-nepali. Partly it is our failure to embrace the different peoples of Nepal totally. The ruling classes in Nepal should learn a lesson, especially in these hours of turbulence, from this interview alone. It is not Udit but the ruling classes and all intellectuals in Nepal who should learn Nepal. To be honest, I also got my important job in my life in Mumbai, thanks partly to which I came to the US. I liked Mumbai, felt like people there are nice and I can actually understand Udit Narayan. Mumbai was my hometown too, but I guess I was still a Nepali. Just a thought!

Its Hard to say but people DO leave Nepalese citizenship for better opportunities. It could be those indian awards thats attracting him. I havent met much Nepalese in North America, but as far as I have known, people talk patriotically before getting the citizenship. Later, when they get get their US citizenship, the become milder... ranting need for 'needs' of life. How many of us commenting in this topic are still with Nepali passport and student visa?

Unfortunately Bhadurland is so busy with racism and filled with prejudice. They are just busy critizing who is Indian, Chinese, American, Nepali, in between etc thats why the country is such mess. Where ever you see bahadur/bahadurnis he/she will in a gang/herd like cattles and cows and fight like cats and dogs or on the phone bitching about someone. Specially the bahuns are like that when the reality is that these silly people have originated from India. They think they are superior when they have nothing much in hand and even the country torn apart and unstable. Bhanus speciality is talk sweetly in front and then come back to stab at the back.

wht do u mean by saying especially bhauns r like that i m bhaun and i dont think like that we come and stab behind ppl's back wow harsh words. and when u say all nepalis r racists do u include u?? u sound like a racists to me. maybe u should change ur own views before u go and point fingers at others. and u know wht long ago there was no india no nepal there was only land and all humans lived there so. no one is better or less than anyone. we r all equal just depends on how u look at it and u certainly look at it differently.

I love his(Udit Narayan) songs. He is a great singer. We do not loose anything to appriciate his capabilty. It does not matter wether he is indian or nepali. It is his bussiness not ours.He can't lie to him self regarding to this matter.A piece of paper(passpot)is not always the proof to be nepali or any other citizen. The blood is his proof .Thank ya all.

Let's juz say that the corrupt & biased leaders of d country, who have wrked relentlessly 4 their personal agenda has brought the nation 2 near anarchy n choas which is more conspicious these days. This process started as immediately as those foreigners escaping Muslim invaders frm their native land, came to the peaceful Himalayan domain n began their gradual pollution of sorts frm their smell 2 their mentality, dirtying the Himalayan innocence with their stench. Had we resisted their immigration into our land, we could have seen development n progress such as Bhutan's where d presence of this group of plp r a virutal minority n so is their loathsome influence. Our people wld have been less vulnerable 2 explotation n deceit frm such parasites of society. Although incidents n events cannot & should never b generalized, the underlying truth will always remain evident. As such dis group of plp is held accountable n not any individual though individuals have done their part in varying magnititudes. These r d ills that have plagued our beautiful Himalayan home. Those who feel strongly against my post r d ones in all likelyhood 2 belong in that group of plp implied whilst the rest r in consent with my view in varying agreement. Cheers 2 all the natives of our land.

if Udit was not a famous singer and just a Taraibasi, would it have mattered so much ? it is nothing but a slave mantality_ the lure, magic and power of celebrity. My bloddy FOOT!!!! I don/t give a rat's ass whether is from Nepal, Afghanistan, or Mars. For all I care, he is a marvellous singer with an incredible voice, with or withot being Nepali.

someone in the thred raised question about Udit in Radio Nepal. My brother used to work in Radio Nepal and he told me of one incident: sambhujeet banskota approached Udit in radio nepal and asked him to record his song, which was writte by Neer Shah, Udit replied he had two other song on the line that day, so he could not. Up comes Neer Shah and slaps him twice across the face!!!! Sambhu calls him names!! Dipak Kharel looks on, does not bother to interfere... Imagine what kind of thoughts must have gone through Udit's mind then! Another artist who was kicked and punched in radio nepal compound in broad daylight by neer shah (instigated by sambhujeet) was prem autari, the famous flute player.. original member of sursudha. so i am not surprised at all why Udit chose not to be called a nepali.

I was born and raised in Nepal. But I am no longer Nepali. I don't claim that I am Nepali. I gave up Nepali citizenship. I am US citizen now. Does it matter to anybody ? Why the hell are people making propaganda about Udit Narayan here?

Yes, I knew a guy who worked in Radio Nepal for 6 years, most of when Udit Narayan was there. According to him, he was always refered as "bihari" by nepalese there. And now that he is popular, nepalese want to call him a nepali. How many times have we called people from madesh, "medashey", or "dhoti". And when they say they are nepali, we accuse them of lying and say "jhut bolchas, medashey bhayera pani, afu lai nepali bhanne?" And when these so called "dhotis" become popular, we want to call them "nepali." Something utterly is wrong with this kind of attitude.

And also, when he came to kathmandu to try his luck, he rented a room in Thamel with some "Ricksha" drivers. And his colleagues at radio nepali made fun of this as well.

What's the big deal. If Mr. Jha does not want to call himself Nepali, there's no harm done. Maybe he ain't Nepali or does not feel like one. Great singer, BTW.

meera and i always think alike(, except sometimes. :-) exactly. why does it matter whether he's no longer nepali? it's you that should matter, not your nationality or your profession or your whatever other extraneous things of social stratification are that may carry pride or stigma... if he were to run to be the president of nepal, then maybe his not being Nepali would be a relavant issue....but as a singer, he's good. his being nepali or not makes no difference. it's his personal choice. let go of your insecurities ppl... let everybody be equal regardless.
