Having initiated so many song threads, it’s literally a shame for me to have taken so long to dedicate a thread to this one of a kind living Nepali today.
Quite arguably, he is one of a few persons so many Nepali expatriates can look up to. Having made a name for himself as a singer in the elite Radio Nepal scene, the man could never set a limited horizon for himself. Something inside his heart, I guess, he heard say “Go South, young man”.

Udit Narayan’s crucial first break as a Bollywood playback singer was provided by popular musician Rajesh Roshan for the movie Unees Bees (1980). The rookie was forgotten along with the movie in no time. The next movie he could sing for was Bade Dilwala (1982) to R.D. Burman's music. As he was placed directly neck to neck against heavyweights like Kishor Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, he could not garner enough credit personally for the hit song. Quite obviously, any promising singer would be over-shadowed by such legends. But with patience and perseverance,
Udit roared back hitting the bull between the eyes with his irresistible number Papa Kehte Hain for the movie Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) and has never looked back since.

Here is Udit singing jeevan ke din chhote sahee duet with legendary Lata for the movie Bade Dilwala. The song’s noteworthy lyric goes like:

Jeevan Ke Din Chhote Sahi
Hum Bhi Bade Dilwale
Kal Ki Humein Fursat Kahan
Sochen Jo Hum Matwale

Jeevan Ke Din Chhote Sahi
Hum Bhi Bade Dilwale
Kal Ki Humein Fursat Kahan
Sochen Jo Hum Matwale

Jeene Ka Rangeen Mausam
Yeh Khoobsurat Zamana
Jeene Ka Rangeen Mausam
Yeh Khoobsurat Zamana
Apne Yehi Chaar Pal Hain
Aage Hai Kya Kisne Jaana
Jeena Jise Aata Hai Woh
In Mein Hi Mauj Mana Le
Kal Ki Humein Fursat Kahan
Sochen Jo Hum Matwale

Jeevan Ke Din Chhote Sahi
Hum Bhi Bade Dilwale
Kal Ki Humein Fursat Kahan
Sochen Jo Hum Matwale

Yeh Zindagi Dard Bhi Hai
Yeh Zindagi Hai Dava Bhi
Yeh Zindagi Dard Bhi Hai
Yeh Zindagi Hai Dava Bhi
Dil Todna Hi Na Jaane
Jaane Yeh Dil Jodna Bhi
Is Zindagi Ka Shukriya
Sadke Main Uparwale
Kal Ki Humein Fursat Kahan
Sochen Jo Hum Matwale

Kal Ki Humein Fursat Kahan
Sochen Jo Hum Matwale

Jeevan Ke Din Chhote Sahi
Hum Bhi Bade Dilwale
Kal Ki Humein Fursat Kahan
Sochen Jo Hum Matwale
Sochen Jo Hum Matwale

Of course, it would be so incomplete not to include his breakthrough song Papa Kehte Hain though it might sound so much like a cliché. I am very particular to include one that has a prelude to it in the voice of Aamir Khan. The latter’s boyish charm and Udit’s gifted voice form a perfect synergy. ?

This rarely gifted Nepali artist has known no boundaries to entertain music lovers by sharing his one of a kind Godly gift.

Please take a moment to post a song, express a personal opinion, or ponder upon how this man’s success inside and outside Nepal’s periphery is significant to other contemporary industrious Nepalese spread far and wide across the globe. Last but not the least, music, arts, or sports might be the last straw for Nepal as a country to come out of the political crises plaguing our land of eternal peace with such a rich diversity .

Peace all!
:)

From what i have heard, Udit Narayan doesn't like to be called a nepali in public, if it is true then why should you and me be proud of this guy who doesn't even like to represent his country.

yeah he was not even born in nepal, he was born just across the border. when he was strugling in radio nepal he was allready married with first wife and with kids too, but when his present wife helped him in getting some singing in radio nepal and in mumbai, he married her with his new found fortune and forget everything about her help and his kid which he fathered. now he doesn't give them any damn, i hate such kinds of person, those who forget his past and run away in hurry that thinking he is gonna miss the train.

Thopa, it doesn't make him any different whether you like him or not. He doesn't give you a s*it. He is famous because of his singing talent. He worked hard and now he is on the top.

Well, As far as I know, Udit hasn't given up Nepali citizenship. Now, I wonder what our righteous friends here think of Tenzing Sherpa, and big professors/technicians here in USA at top universities who gave up Nepali citizenship as soon as they got chance. Or is it only 'madhesi' who has to carry the burden of being Nepali?

For me, even if he spits at Nepal now (which I know he doesn't, and most of Nepali movie makers still beg with him in Bombay to sing in their movie), he is worth praising because I loved his 'darpan chhaya' and 'balla balla bhet bhaako dina' so much. Thanks for making our life better Udit. God bless you.

Well said pire. Lets not by hypocritical guys and lets ask ourselves. How many times have we said "I hate Nepal and I hate Nepalese." ??!!??!! I'm willing to concede saying so. Does that mean that I'm not a Nepali anymore or I hate Nepal and Nepalese forever? Why does Udit still sing Nepali songs if he doesn't Nepal? Why does he visit Nepal? For the sake of earning money by singing Nepali songs? I don't think so!

Forgot to add, he was born in Saptari, not India. Just because he was a madhise ( not in an offensive way ) doesn't mean that he is an Indian! He is a Nepali like myself and yourselves who opted to go to India as his karmathalo just like myself and yourselves ( USA /abroad ).

Udit Narayan fails to appear before women's panel again

Patna: The Bihar Women’s Commission Friday gave singer Udit Narayan 10 more days to appear before it to explain his position on a complaint filed by a woman claiming to be his first wife after he failed to show up before the panel, complaining of "chest pain."

"Udit talked to me on phone and complained about pain in his chest and sought 15 days to come before the Com-mission. I accepted his prayer with (complainant) Ranjana’s consent and gave him 10 days’ time," Commission chairperson Manju Prakash told reporters.

Asked from where Narayan had called her, Prakash said his lawyer Mahasweta Chatterjee arranged the conversation over mobile phone. Hence, she did not know the origin of the call.

During last date of hearing on June nine, the Commission had given the "fourth and last chance" to Narayan to appear before it on June 16, and threatened that a warrant would be issued against him if he failed to do so. Ranjana Narayan had created a flutter last month by claiming to be the singer's first wife, a charge that has been denied by Narayan. (PTI)

i was just telling you guys why i don't like udit narayan, was not telling you do the same. I was not trying to be hypocritical, i like not to be. anyway when i hear his voice.... no i don't want to tell, you guys might take it offensively. his voice is melodiciously gay, but worth listening but i don't like that all. i never liked his style of singingsince my early age. i liked more kind of narayan gopal, he was sentimental, and i had much up and downs of feelings in my early childhood. and udit narayan never suited my feelings and also i tried to listen but listening him was kind of torture. thats all guys nothing personal.

I know a couple of persons who knwo Udit Narayan personally. They have told me that during their visit to Mumbai, he was as helpful he could be.

Another thing, we should understand why he is reluctant about saying he is Nepali in Indian Public. I mean he has to make a living by winning the appreciation of the Indian public, not nepali public and the indian public is as racist, if not less, the Nepali Public. That might be the reason. When Pahade ppl from nepal dont want to listen to anything said by a Madhesi person, how can you expect Udit Narayan to show that he is proud to be a Nepali and yet be liked by the Indian public. What do you expect him to do ? Carry a Nepali flag whenever goes and tell everyone that he is not an Indian but a Nepali ? And it is a fact that he still has a Nepali citizenship, not Indian.

Morethan that these citizenship issues are bulshit. India made him what he is so if I was him I would regard India more home than Nepal. Had he not been that successful nobody would in Nepal would give him a damn.

I know my views will not be liked by freaking racist sajhaian like thopa and raazstone. I really feel ashamed by the fact that these young minds are still influenced by Madhesi-Pahadi feelings. I wonder how our fellow Madhesi Nepalis find these posts, if possible I'd like to apologize for these racist comments.

I'm sure most of these sajhains find pride receiving US or any other country's citizenship, so what are you? Remember that when you point a finger towards someone, three fingers are pointed towards you very damn self.

Undoubtedly, Udit has a magical voice and he has done a hard work getting up there, so better appreciate him rather than trying to mock him.

Peace

Keeri Naath said "...India made him what he is so if I was him I would regard India more home than Nepal. Had he not been that successful nobody would in Nepal would give him a damn.."

I finally agree with this maoist, Keeri Naath as he has come up with a few capitalist view-points. Individuals will strive to achieve whatever they can to the best of their abilities. Now would that work under your communism state? BTW, you seem to be a smart dude able to rationalize and know what's best for individuals and yet you go about supporting maosim (hardcore extremist communism)? This just doesn't make sense unless you're trying to be a smarty-azz cowboy trying to take on all against you...Hope in the near future, you'd see the light and use your smarts to walk the correct path.

BTW, I think he's a good singer (if not great). QSQT was my favorite movie back in my primary school days and watched it atleast 8 times...I still remember the time in Delhi when my mom buying me a TIPS cassette that had QSQT on side A and Tezaab on side B...hahah knew all the sonigs by heart. After that Joh jeeta wohi Sikandar's "Pehla Nasha", damn reminds me of my first crush! hahahah

I've lost track of hindi songs these days, so have no clue what he's been up to recently.

Samsara,
I need to make a few things clear here.First, I have never supported hardcore communism you and all other are trying to prove (that is if you even care about this) out here. I have, definitely, supported CPN-M and they dont have a communist economy in their minds for Nepal. Some posts, made especially by someone known as Danger, has made me think over the type of language I use, but not in what I believe. I believe in reformist socialism, that is all about bringing reforms in all levels of the society. I have always supported press freedom, civil freedom and have always condemned autocracy. Probably the language that I use, i.e. supporting specially CPN-M and CPN-UML may have created some confusions.

I support CPN-M because I think they are going to make changes in Nepal. They may, they may not and if they grow to be the same, write it down, I will be the one to condemn them. That is my personal view or whatever you want to say. I do and will continue to support CPN-M and CPN-UML.

Also, I have always said that the Maoists have done extortions but you need to not just look at the surface. I am not trying to they did good but, it was to happen. As I always say there are good and bad people everywhere, there are some bad people in the maoists, may be a little more than some.

There are many other things that are responsible for the damage done in Nepal and what I want to say is that we should not just blame all that to the Maoists. And there are people in Sajha who have the same thing everytime like killing teachers, looting banks etc etc and I dont even want to discuss with them, I'd rather discuss with a rock.

Alright I'm not a political analyst or something and whatever we say, does not really matter. Lets see what happens in the future.

Udit has been my favourite since my childhood days.

Raffi's voice has been copied (Sonu Nigam), Kishore Kumar voice has been imitated number of times (Kumar Sanu gives a nosy version) and Mukesh voice is rendered by his own son (Nitin Mukesh). Balasubramanyam's voice is unique but lots of southern singers have similar voice now (even Yesudas), Abhijeet's voice is melodious but I feel like he is a combination of the top three singers I mentioned in the second line above. I think Udit is the only unique voice, whose style and voice hasn't been copied by anybody. He gave the true life to Pehla Nasha, as samsara mentioned. I still remember his old hit, "Sun Jane Jaa, Kehta hai kya, Yeh Bahaar ka sama." and "Balla balla Bhet bhako dina."

I have an immense respect for this man (there are certain numbers that he over does sometimes) as a singer. But as a Nepali? I cannot comment. I don't know if the rumor that he wants to be called Indian than Nepali is true or not. If it is true, then he loses my respect as a Nepali, no matter what justifications you have, you cannot be ever ashamed of your own country.

Many years ago i was watching Zee TV interview udit narayan, and the host asked this question "udit jee you have been to so many beautiful places around the world....which one is your favorite?"...and this was udit's answer "sare jaha se aacha hindustan hamara"

so how do you expect me as a nepali respect and honor a guy who is ashamed of who he is.

but in a way i'm glad he refers himself as indian because i wouldn't want an unethical opportunist like udit calling himself a nepali.

p.s. Keeri_naath, your analogy about "I mean he has to make a living by winning the appreciation of the Indian public, not nepali public" is absolutely worthless! it's one to say i like india and indian people it's another to say i am indian. not that i'm a big fan of hers, but manisha koirala made it pretty big in india, but did we ever hear her claiming to be indian instead of nepali?? don't get me wrong udit narayan is a very good singer but his identity crisis is a total disgrace.

Dude, when I saw his stage program in Denver- CO, back 2000, in that huge Indian mass more than 20000, he also sang a Nepali song from movie "Kusume-Rumal." Wasn’t it enough to show him how he loves Nepal or he has to tell each and every channels or papers about his citizenship? When his first blockbuster QSQT scored, one of the leading Indian paper, Times of India, mentioned him as Nepali “Kancha,” Just make a judgment, you and me stamped Nepali and he (Udit) with controversy on being Nepali. You and me being stamped Nepali, not able to sing a Nepali song among those Indian mass, but he did. We Nepalese, never appreciate other Nepali’s success. Always try to smear campaign other’s success.

I wonder when will the Nepalese people get out of this hollow patriotism. They have problems with Udits' saying that he is Indian, people got into the streets when somebody spread the misleading rumor that some bollywood actor said something about bad Nepal leading to the death of some, people burned down Qatar Airways and Nabil Bank and god knwos what else when unfortunately some of our Nepali borthers were murdered by Islamic Terrorists etc etc. And when the Nation needs them, they do nothing.

Please Please Please get that "Khokro Rastriyaa" out of your heads. Nepalese people have been boasting the same set of things for god knwos how long: Sagarmatha, Buddha, Khukuri, Dhaka Topi etc etc. Its high time that we realize where we stand. The patriotism or whatever you want to show, is not being done in the right way.

Talking about India:
How many of you have problem when Indian Diplomats, presuming and imposing Hindi, speaks in hindi in Nepali press meets ?
How many of you have ever thought of watching a Nepali movie, instead of a hindi movie ?
How many of you have done anything to promote Nepalese Industry, keep your cities clean etc etc ?

I knwo I have not done many, but I have done some and I dont boast my hollow patriotism either.

I think I went too far, but things are not impertinent.
