For those who like to misutilize a good deal of their valuable time thinking about space, time, velocity of light, trying to visualize 4 dimensions etc, "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking is a good read . Easy to read, comprehensible and targeted for ordinary users, it has been a classic and has tought most of our physics teachers most of what they know about space and time.
The digital version can be accessed at:
http://newton.physics.metu.edu.tr/~fizikt/html/hawking/A_Brief_History_in_Time.html
Don't miss chapter 1 and 12. Go thru' remaining in your boredom.

Space began at the ascent of the mind and ends with the demise of the imagination!

and confused i liked ur views.. or the philosopher's view ..whichever... i also beleive that universe is infinite.. and there is a creator..

And who created the creator? By himself/herself/itself? By someone/something else?

Extending the thread... and making it more complex than it already its... :-) !!

The answer is easy:

Space starts from 0
It ends at 0.

But the following question is difficult:
Whether the egg was born first or the Hen?

You partition 0 into two parts:

Particle and AntiParticle, then, you will have two universe. We live in
particle universe and there can be another anti-particle universe.

In classical physics we learned photon as the elementary particle that
behaves like a particle sometime and the other time it behaved like
energy. Bose developed Boson ............. and .......... so there are
what not? Dozons of elementary particles like Electron, proton, neutron
and Boson. .............

So, god exist in the same way universe has 6 extreme ends.

Genesis says Chicken came first before the egg. So that being solved lets continue the thread. I wonder if there is an axes system we can abstract such that time is in one of its axes. But if we do get time in one of the axes what are we going to put in other axes because we define motion in terms of time like at that particular time it was there, after these many years that grew. So the normal things we know will not be appropriate to label other axes. Then the remaining thing that should accompany time will be something that is independent of time. But can we think of anything that is independent of time? I cannot think of anything that can be independent from time.
Talking about Space and if it is limited. By defintion it is the place where universe exist. So there cannot be an end to Space. Because if there were, then it would mean that the thing we were considering to be space is actually a little bubble and that the bubble itself exists somewhere else. And so what we were regarding as space actually is not The Space. Thus the Space is infinite. I like to imagine the space where our universe exist as a big big sphere in three dimensional axes system. So the sphere itself is limited. But the space in which it exist goes on for infinity. And there actually doesnot even need to be a wall that separates our sphere from the rest of the space. It could be an open sphere meaning after certain point the sphere does not exist any more but it is not bounded by something visible and so we can always form solar systems of some radius inside the sphere.
Yikes I dont think I make much sense here, do I?.

I meant universe has six infinities. Center of the universe is right here
at my heart. Who can prove it wrong?

there is no certain rigid factor, to state about this topic. everything is arguable, one way or another. I knew someone would certainly raise the question, who created the creator?

Creator, in my sense is time. Time was the creator, and who created time?? time created itself.. there is no explanation.

but again, it can also be expalined the other way around, we can state there was no creator, everything happened fundamentally, step by step, we question about creator because human mind is in need for cause in every sense..for example, when you see a beautiful picture will you not suspect a good artist might have drew that picture, just like that when we talk about the universe we begin to state it had a creator, but did it or did it not, we dont know.

space is for now infinite, because we have not yet known the finite porpotion of space, nor we can ever know, atleast in our lifetime. We need to compare something to something else for its end, so even if there is an end, everything that comes after that is still universe, because universe is everything that is their. we cannot have its end. Finally, these are the same words said by Nepaliballer and Yatri earlier.

arch, i have read the book before, and the most important pharse i thougth in the whole book was this :

"However, if we do discover a complete theory, it should in time be understandable in broad principle by everyone, not just a few scientists. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists, and just ordinary people, be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason ? for then we would know the mind of God."

it is a great book indeed!

SPACE CANNOT HAVE AN END, BECAUSE IF THERE'S AN END THERE'S ALWAYS A BEGINING.

There is no end. Only begining.

End is a relative term used to define intervals of begining.

end = new begining and vice versa.

The space never ends, its depth cannot be measured by human brain.Just thinking about it will make you head hurt. When I was kid I used to always think about this.and things like if there is god...I dont know..Maybe there is..maybe there is god who makes sky blue and water colorless..or maybe there is no good becuase there are millions of people unjustfully dying everyday..See these questions are simple but the answers arent there.I hope I find the answer...but again thats just hope.

In Theory of relativity= Gravitational constant makes it limited
In Quantum Theory= The 5th dimention makes all sorts of things possible in theory.

Like in Hindu Religion= Every time Bramha blinks his eyes, a new world is created(parallel universe). Now when you get to that point there is no limitations(its still uncharted terr.)

And then there is the new string theory( Check out Brian Green' sbook on String theory)

ok guys
so how would infinite space imply infinite matter? i thought the big bang had significant amt of energy and matter, having infinite amt of heat n light.

hmm, bathroomcoffee you do know what you are talking about :)

yes, by using the theory of relativity both things can be predicted. A finite universe and an infinite one. it was by a guy named, Alexander Friedman, who used the theory of relativity and stated that the finite universe will have more enery inside it than a infinite universe. ..

Using even the theory of relativity, which says universe is finite or infinite depends on its density, but when it was calculated by, i think it was Friedman again,?? the result was close to its critical density, which suggest universe is finite. but we dont know for certain.

and when talking about gravitational constant, we cannot be sure that every corner of the galaxy holds the same constant. Yes, the once we have seen which are many light yrs away might match, what we know, but what about the rest which we havent even seen, it might be of something that we have not seen..

and lastly, we would like to consider an infinite universe because it is easier to imagine then a 3 D universe..

Aliciaa, the answer to your question also lies in the enery or the density of that matter, if the universe is infinite right now, it was certainly infinite even when big bang took place so, the density might have been very huge, but it is finite, then the desity should have been very small..

I guess, as in i think, or in my opinion:

I think god created animals/humans and made them smart/intelligent enough to think and question about the "SPACE", evolutions, era, etc etc. but not smart enough to figure out the answers to these question..............

Pease Out

Alicia, you are asking the wrong question and trying to get the right answer.... :) Space never existed independently, it is always associated with time. So, the term "Space and Time" would be better.

The very typical problem is that we think universe is a 2D and it goes on expaning like the circumference of circle. Then the question is asked, what is outside the circumference of that ......... A BIG ????????? So, space must be infinite :) otherwise there is no way out!!

let's assume that the universe is surface of the sphere, or cylinder.... as you wish. ( I prefer sphere) if you walk around , you will find that it seems to infinite but the sphere has finite surface area.. it is easy to visualise it, as we live in 3D world. But The universe is not 3D but 4D or may be even higher Dimension.. So, the universe is the surface of that higher dimesional, which itself has more than two dimension. It is difficult to understand but atleast you can try... So, for me space and time is finite... :):)

I don't claim that my claim is correct. you are free to critisise and make corrections. :)
Till then,

niks npl, I don't believe it is necessary that I have to agree with what everyone else said or vice versa.I was just looking at things from my perspective and what i think it is. I am not saying I am right. And i am not sure if yu are right either. I think some scientist will come up with better explanations in coming days.
:)
