Our health and election

As the recent news about journalist Palpali rises in the news, we all feel our cold feet if we were in that position. Getting a disease in this country is almost inviting death. If we are suffered for some mild cold and fever, it is manageable under the budget. If we were to face any of that kind of that Mr Palpali did then that’s it, we are done.

Recently, former Prime Minister Marichman Singh had to face the same scenario. Despite the fact we talked about his sincerity and claim his uncorrupt nature, we need to think beyond this boundary. We must have a solution to this. There is a need of health for all, immediately. What this means is, the health system in Nepal must be changed as quickly as possible so that none would die being deprived of money or any such boundaries. Of course these political madness has short sightedness in many aspects so far but we can not let the citizens die because of un implementation of health plans that would serve each and every one of us in a cheaper, reliable and instant basis. Recent study shows that cancer related to unhygienic food has touched men and women of all the ages. This rapidity is yet to be checked and planned so that it would not occur again and again.

The national health plan is as important as air, water or any other basic necessity. Its totally unfortunate that in the name of changing the system; there is very less achievement in this sector. If a family member is to be diseased, it costs the whole family a fortune. Every taxpayer must be entitled to health subsidy in case of emergency. The practice of ‘money first’ policy must be abolished right away.

So far this article only provides a vague idea about the necessity of public health but we need to mention more about the how to.. factors.

There’s a very easy solution, whenever a national budget is issued, the whole budget must be taxed at the rate of 0.5%(suggested, may be even more). For example, the recent budget went off for more than Rs 500 billion. If we tax even only for Nrs 200 billion, we can put 1 billion on the safer side just to provide subsidy to our own people who are in real need. Of course its implementation needs to be more scientific and practical but that’s something hospitals should be consulted by the government. In the time when we are building the constitution itself, an outgoing personality must emerge to carry this ‘lives saving strategy’.

Let people feel and implement what they really need instead of lame gossips which are indirect or less important to our existence.
